What is a Double-Sided Flexible PCB?

A flexible PCB (also called a flexible printed circuit or FPC) is a type of printed circuit board made from bendable materials. These materials can be adhesive or non-adhesive.

The copper used to make FPCs comes in two main types: electrolytic copper and rolled copper. Rolled copper, especially the non-stick kind, is more flexible and easier to fold.

A double-sided (or double-layer) flexible PCB has two layers of conductive copper, separated by an insulating layer in the middle. This design makes double-sided FPCs an ideal solution for applications needing higher circuit density.

Where are Double-Sided Flex PCBs Used?

Double-sided flex PCBs are widely used because they work so well in many areas, including:

  • Communications (phones, networking gear)
  • Consumer Electronics (cameras, wearables, laptops)
  • Automotive (sensors, displays, controls)
  • Medical (monitors, imaging devices, implants)
  • Industrial (robotics, machinery controls)
  • Aerospace (avionics, satellites)
  • Military (radar, communication systems)
  • Transportation (train/vehicle controls, navigation)
